2004
19:20 Warble
Fly … Play energy-charged folk music - tradpunk,
folkstomp, rock'n'reel - call it what you like. Their cocktail of influences
are clear in their music: doses of unruly celtic, shots of punk-inspired
degeneracy and their own debauched update on rakish life, populated with
various alcohol-sodden users, boozers and abusers.
20:40 BLUE HORSES
… "From the time they burst on, all bluster, black and bondage,
it be obvious to anyone with an ounce of wit that there is far more to
Blue Horses than instant image... Liz Prendergast's vocal is a haunting
thing, lending credence to the doom laden lyric. In fact the use of her
voice varies considerably from cooing lullaby, to big, belt-'em-out rocker
via gothic chiller"
22:30 PEATBOG FAERIES….
The band have taken their superbly seamless blend of crisply played tunes
on pipes, fiddle and whistle, a world class rhythm section and a totally
diverse but successful mix of other musical styles and turned the dance-o-meter
up to 12 to create the most pumping, uplifting and exiting Scottish fusion
you're ever likely to come across. The Isle of Skye is a magical place…
steeped in history, mystery and Gaelic culture. It is the only place in
the world that could produce a band like the Peatbog Faeries. When they
play at festivals or gigs around the world they still manage to impart
a unique flavour of their Hebridean Island Home.

For more than 30 years Martin Carthy has been the most visible, versatile
and, at times, controversial figure in English folk music. Whether in
the folk club, on the concert stage or in a TV studio, there are few roles
he has not played, from ballad singer to folk-rock guitarist. While his
settings of traditional songs with guitar have influenced a generation
of performers, he is also an authoritative interpreter of newly composed
material.
16:20 David Saw …
"David has an abundance of talent in both writing and performing.
He certainly has a way with words so that many of his songs could be described
as 21st Century urban poetry....This wonderfully evocative poetry extends
throughout taking many shapes and in many moods. David Saw is a major
talent, one deserving of wide recognition."
17:40 Jambience …
As well as using mainstream western musical instruments in their pieces,
they also incorporate a wide array of non-western instruments in their
arrangements. These include didgeridoos, tablas, djembes, darboukas, a
tamboura and a scharutti box to name a few. The fusion of indigenous musical
styles with contemporary western music produces something invariably fresh
and exciting, which pushes music beyond mere passive entertainment. Stylistically
as eclectic as their instrumentation.
18.40 Sound Checks

for anyone who's been on the folk and roots scene in the UK and beyond

The Ockbrook Village French
Music & Dance Experience
The Ockbrook French Music & Dance Sessions are one of the best places
in this country to experience Traditional French Folk Music & Dance.
The sessions attract a large number of dancers & musicians and provide
an amazing opportunity to bourrée the night away. You don't need
to be a musician or an accomplished dancer to enjoy it; just come along
and soak up the atmosphere! Having said that, musicians are always welcome
and if you want to try the dancing there are always regulars who will
show you what to do.
Waking the Witch
Their voices range from haunting, delicate beauty to an explosion of soaring
harmonies. Their lyrics bloom from a place of uncompromising honesty and
naked emotion. Their roots are wedged in blues and R&B, rock and folk
and the result is a sound that blends and transcends these genres into
something unique and personal. Conceived at the beginning of 2003, it
didn't take long for the Yorkshire-based foursome, namely Patsy Matheson,
Jools Parker, Michelle Plum and Rachel Goodwin, to make their mark, captivating
audiences far and wide. All are acclaimed solo artists in their own right,
with a musical pedigree to match. Michelle has been working with Chumbawamba
for the last 2 years, while Patsy, Rachel and Jools have at one time or
another shared stages with the likes of Christy Moore, John Martyn, Mary
Coughlan, Glen Tilbrook, Sam Brown and the Saw Doctors.
Nigel Mazlyn Jones
A vocal style which sees Nigel making veritable leaps of faith from one
note to another with thought provoking lyrics that seek to enlighten and
encourage. The various moods tones and textures resonate, cut through
by the songs lyrical concerns for nature and the environment.
His credo is pretty much to be green and make the most of what your given,
spiritual or natural. As much a maverick asRoy Harper or John Martyn,
Mazlyn Jones is a zealot, well meant, melodic and thoughtful.
His acoustic guitar is crisp, solid and purposeful.
Intelligent meaningful songs containing high inputs of creativity and
musical sensitivity. His work reflects a passion for nature and the environment.
On stage he uses an acoustic 6 string and two 12 string guitars, a Santor
and percussion. The multitude of musical boundaries he manages to cross,
together with such an emotive and passionate voice make Mazlyn's unique
blend a must to be heard.
Faul Bradley
New acoustic blues, highly original with a fresh and crisp approach.
The Levellers full band acoustic show.
Mark Chadwick, Simon Friend, Jon Sevink, Jeremy Cunningham Charlie Heather,
Stephen Boakes, & Matt Savage. Are The full band acoustic show
Still playing folk rock in their own irresistible way with social and
political engagement
Make no mistake the Levellers are massive. They score Top 10 albums and
singles, they play huge sell-out concerts across Europe and, whether they
like it or not, they're the figurehead for the 'crusties' and travellers,
the anarcho punks and hippies, the festival lovers and bean-burger eaters,
the young and disenfranchised, and the just plain bonkers.
Their most famous song 'What a Beautiful Day' was a huge hit.
Fourteen years on, the Levellers are as exciting as ever
Derrin Nauendorf & Dave Downing
Very rarely will you hear an acoustic guitar played with such confidence
and their approach of voice, acoustic guitar and basic drum kit is a rare
relationship that just has to be investigated.
A sheer musical genius, Nauendorf should not be missed: he exudes talent,
passion, and a raw natural ability that rivals the world’s finest.
“Derrin and Dave are certainly up there with the greats, and yes,
we do mean Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen" Derrin and David embody the
principles on which real music is built – uncompromising to their
musical beliefs and ready for the long fight to achieve global success.
Vinny Peculiar
Vinny Peculiar, what can we say? Funny, great voice, nice hat, very entertaining
and mad as a shithouse rat! Stories, stories, stories - the attempted
murder of his music teacher whilst he was taking swimming club, being
thrown off the cricket team in school due to glam metal and losing his
girlfriend to Jesus Christ are just a few topics to be explored in 30
minutes or so of Vinny's vitriolic rants!! Refreshingly brilliant, undeniable
genius
Vinny Peculiar is all about the words. Looking (and singing a bit) like
Elvis Costello in wig and baseball cap, it’s hard to work out what’s
more entertaining - the story-cum-songs or the preceding self-deprecating
monologues.
Clutching his guitar, he gyrates and jack-knifes round the stage like
a busker desperate for 20p to get into the tube station toilets. Endearing
and irreverent.
3 Daft Monkeys
From Cornwall comes one of the most innovative and exciting bands of the
"nu-folk" scene, 3 Daft Monkeys.
Whether it's Celtic, Balkan, Gypsy, Spanish, Cornish or other World Music
you are drawn to, you will hear it's influences in their self-written
music. Add to this the band's varied backgrounds from Dance, Dub, Punk,
Reggae and
Traditional Folk, and you have a stunning combination.
It's quirky, it's groovy, it's fun
Kev Dempsey & Joe Broughton
Kevin is a guitarist, singer and producer second to none. Having worked
with everyone from Percy Sledge to Dando Shaft and The Marvelettes to
Alice Coltrane. Not forgetting the incredible “Whippersnapper”
whose line-up also included Dave Swarbrick, Chris Leslie and Martin Jenkins.
With this band Kevin toured the world extensively and recorded five albums
Joe Broughton was born in 1976. Although he is a classically trained violin
player, his style owes much more to Folk, Jazz and Blues. His playing
is “Spine-tingling”. Throughout his childhood up to the present
day Joe has been performing with his brother Ben and he is now a member
of the legendary Albion Band. Ashley Hutchings describes him as “a
massive individual talent”.
All the bands out there who think you can “jazz-up” folk music,
hear this and weep!
Cross Oth Hands
A notable Derbyshire focus, interspersed with other English songs, and
European tunes.
Eddie Morton & The Bushburys
'With a new sound and a new line-up Eddy Morton & the Bushburys launch
their unique brand of 'erdig' pop on an otherwise unsuspecting world.
With harmonies the Eagles would be proud of and songs to lift the heart
and ease the soul the band take another giant step in the great leap forward
landing squarely in the twenty first Century.''
Last Nights Fun
"Instrumentally they are like a pared down version of the Bothy Band.
Musicians like these will ensure traditional music's survival into the
21st century and they do a great job in this century too."
Diego Brown and the Good Fairy
It's not often you come across an act as genuinely different, let alone
one as entertaining and inventive as this duo
The duo's surrealistic vocal gymnastics and harmony, witty narrative lyrics
and daunting musicality appeals to listeners of any age and persuasion.
Although often labelled as 'roots and folk genre', their music takes in
influences as diverse as the Bonzos, Ian Dury, Talking Heads and music
hall - think Brummie buskers with a London edginess, a strong pop sensibility
and atavistic memories of the BBC Light Program

Fri 29th
OSIBISA 22.30 to 24.00
OSIBISA exploded onto the music world in 1971 with a pulsating and vibrant
sound that was to engulf the tired post 60's rock scene. Translated
from Ghanain OSIBISA means "criss-cross rhythms that explode with
happiness". The band's percussive influence began to manifest itself
within the music of their contemporaries. The OSIBISA poly-rhythms and
percussive breaks were to be an integral feature of the disco boom that
was to follow in the late 1970's. OSIBISA's unique fusion of African,
Caribbean, rock, jazz, Latin and R&B paved the way for other potent
music forces such as Bob Marley and the emergence of African music in
the 1980's. Indeed OSIBISA are seen by many as the Godfathers of World
Music. One of the important reasons for OSIBISA's enduring success has
been their highly energetic and extravagant stage show.
The Angel Brothers and Satnam Singh 21.00 to 22.10

dub effects. A snaking mix of Bhangra & classical Indian rhythms

and a tantalising fusion of ambient beats, heart felt celtic vocals
and film strings. Lament are two souls, Kath and Ant, drawing inspiration
from artists as diverse as Ennio Morricone to 50's soundtracks as they
embark on creating their own glorious soundtrack. " A wave of warm
strings and subtle beats create the perfect soundtrack and vehicle for
Kath's sensual and vaguely exotic vocal."

Ozric Tentacles 22.30 to 24.00
JamBase a New York Correspondant wrote ...Man, oh man, oh man oh man.
I cannot put into words what the experience was like last night. It
was the second time I saw 'em (first was last year in Atlanta), so it's
not like I didn't know what we were in for. But, holy cats, I felt like
I had just stood in the small space between two trains passing each
other at full speed. For about 2 hours. I knew it would be an incredible
show when I went down to the venue before just to catch a look and possibly
say hello. No such luck; they had sound-checked and gone to dinner by
the time I got there. But the guy watching the back door, who hadn't
ever heard of Ozrics let alone heard the music, was raving about the
sound check. Aparently, this guy was floored. "Man, I can't wait
to actually see the show!" he giggled, teetering on a bar stool
outside the back door. Jeeze-oh-peter, what can I say? My girlfriend
Patty may have stated it best afterwards when she looked down, shook
her head and said "Man, that was a MEAN show!" The band seemed
more relaxed than I remembered at the previous show. They were incredibly
tight (of course) but I was surprised by how loose they were with the
music in terms of just cutting loose and wailing. I guess this didn't
strike me so much last year. And they were having a _lot_ of fun playing.
I think the crowd was very responsive and enthusiastic, which it seems
encouraged a wicked performance. I can't remember the whole set list...
not necessarily in order: Vita Voom (I think), Xingu, Chinatype, Pixel
Dream (what a god@#$% tune!!!), Saucers, (wow... it was more than I
could have imagined), Eternal Wheel, Vibuthi, Sploosh! (this tune kicked
my ass) and I can't remember what others. They had written Sunscape
on their setlist for the encore, but decided to play White Rhino Tea
and Throbbe instead. Whew... I mean, jeeze, what can I say to describe
it? OZRIC.TENTACLES INVADE NYC The Ozric Tentacles hail from England
and have been making music together for close to 20 years. They are
a very intriguing band that combines many different things to form their
psychedelic trance rock sound. Musically they are all over the map in
their creation of danceable groovy trance jams. The Ozrics have been
a very important band in Europe and created a large following for themselves
for many years. They continue to make dynamic and challenging music
that will certainly keep you interested all night long. They don’t
make it over to the US very often so it’s a rare opportunity to
see them do it live.
La Cod Afrique 20.40 to 22.10
le Cod Afrique was formed in 1998 and soon started to play a major part
in the thriving Midlands dance scene, bridging the gap between traditional
and modern dance music.Following on the success of last year’s
EP ‘Frique le Coda’, the band’s new CD ‘Mello’
is an evocative and exciting blend of traditional and up to the minute
dance styles based on material premiered on last year’s festival
circuit.Featuring driving hurdy gurdy, wild African rhythms and Arabic
dance, live performances are spectacular and highly-charged.

The Rattlers 17.20 to 18.20
The Rattlers work with a traditional Celtic / Blues / Folk Rock base,
and then throw on a range of different toppings - and then serve it
up with the best service you could ask for. If folk music in Britain
was as big as Country & Western is in the States, then these guys
would be national superstars.

his own rhythmic sensibilities, this Australian performer is rapidly
forging a solid and enviable reputation as a masterful and beguiling

The Oyster Band 22.30 / 2400
Influenced by all manner of music, culture and styles, the heartbeat of
the band is a deep-rooted love of the traditional music of Britain. Not
the invented tradition of twee choruses and dodgy ideologies But a tradition
that dealt in integrity, passion, human experience and human emotion -
songs that make you want to dance/laugh/cry/jump for joy/kick a few heads
in. Hey, that could be folk music, it could be rock music... maybe it's
just GOOD music. Whatever, it has helped the Oysters become one of the
most irresistible bands of the last decade. And (almost) the one before
that too.
Ezio 20.30 / 22.00
The Music of Ezio Lunedei and Mark "Booga" Fowell
Remember the last time a song really reached you? Straight in, deep inside,
talking directly to you, about what you feel - just as if this song was
written especially for you, about you?
Well - this is what the music of EZIO is about - deep, honest, emotional
songs that hit a raw nerve.
EZIO always has two sides:
It's two lead guitarists in one band, Ezio Lunedei and Mark "Booga"
Fowell who together form a perfect unit.
And it's two different kinds of music - at home it's the perfect studio
recordings, on stage it's breathtaking live performances to which you
will get addicted after the first gig you've been to.
Stacey Jane Douglas. 19.00 / 20.10

Sunday 25th May 12.00 till 24.00
Warble fly 22.30 / 24.00
Energy-charged folk music - tradpunk, folkstomp, rock'n'reel - call it
what you like. Their cocktail of influences are clear in their music:
doses of unruly celtic roots (think Dubliners), shots of punk-inspired
degeneracy (think Pogues), plus a large slice of borrowing from anything
else that vaguely works from ska to rock'n'roll, from Texmex to Bluegrass.
A typical set of theirs contains equal measures of souped up trad. standards
and their own 2003 update on the rakish life of the rover. Similar to
the great chroniclers of lowlife debauchery such as Shane MacGowan, Tom
Waits and Nick Cave they have created their own personal wild and colourful
soundscape.
Elmos Grandez & ZZ Birmingham 20.40 / 22.10
Thirty years in the business, this widely acclaimed blues-man is a real
character. A founder member of R Cajun & The Zydeco Bros, appearing

work; his dynamic stage presence, blistering harmonica and compelling
vocals unite with surreal and off-the-wall humour to make up one of the
truly great performers on the blues scene today.
