String Beats

String Beats are Sandeep Kandola, Harminder Klair and Harkiran Sahota.

Sandeep Singh Kandola originally started learning the Dhadi Sangeet tradition of Sarangi (a bowed three-stringed instrument) from the late Bhai Sarban Singh Gill in 2008. He then began to take guidance from world-renowned Ustad Dharambir Singh in 2012. Through Ustad Jee, he was sent to learn from Pandit Bharat Bhushan Goswami. He took further guidance of Sarangi technique from Sri Harsh Narayan and the Gayaki style of music from Ustad Satninder Singh Bodal. In addition to playing in String Beats, he’s also a maths teacher.

Being enthralled by the sound and artistry of tabla (hand drums) from a young age, Harkiran Sahota started by learning the basics from his father, Surendar Singh Sahota, beginning his serious training in 2014 when he became the disciple of the world-renowned tabla maestro Pandit Sanju Sahai. Harkiran’s tabla journey has been one of growth and learning with some notable performances along the way, including accompanying artists such as Jasdeep Singh Degun, while also performing at many Guru Poornima ceremonies. Harkiran was featured on the web series ‘My Journey and Me’ in August 2020, performing a tabla solo live on Barkat Radio in 2020. He’s also a graduate of mechanical engineering.

Harminder is a talented sitar player based in Wolverhampton, learning under the guidance of sitar maestro Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE since 2012. Having honed her skills, she’s been able to showcase her music in various venues – from intimate settings, to large-scale venues across the country. This has included festivals, weddings, and Commonwealth celebrations, as well as performing at prestigious venues such as the Savoy and Barbican Centre. Through her playing, she is able to bridge the cultures of East and West, connecting different genres through the timeless beauty of sitar melodies.
