MOST OF US WILL NEVER DO GREAT THINGS, BUT WE CAN ALL DO SMALL THINGS IN A GREAT WAY.

Anna Hapax

Anna Hapax first started making electronic music back in 2023 while working in a second-hand electronics store. Though a longtime raver and lover of electronic music, she had never thought about going into production, as her musical background was in classical violin. This all changed one day when a Behringer TD-3 came into her store – this was the physical element that had been missing from her experiments with Ableton, and being able to recreate the acid sounds she loved made her realise that this had been what was missing from her earlier forays into software DAWs – the ability to shape and sculpt a sound using knobs and buttons rather than a mouse and keyboard. The TD-3 came home with her the next day, and so began her journey into the world of synths and music hardware.

Soon her bedroom jams progressed into live hardware performances, attending electronic open-mic nights in her hometown of Stoke. Since then, she has gone on to play in venues across the Midlands, Essex and London. Her DAWless live setup usually consists of two Korg Electribes (the EMX-1 and ESX-1), Roland TR8-S and SH01-A for the beats, melodies and samples, with the TD-3 bringing the acid riffs.

Hapax’s sound draws from influences across the spectrum of 80s and 90s acid, electro and techno, with samples torn from archival footage and retro video games. There are no laptops here – Hapax seeks to bring back some of the original DIY spirit of techno with a rough-and-ready analogue sound directly inspired by her experiences on and off the dancfloor.
